Yes it is a button. Hard to date exactly but it is old. Maybe late 1700's to early 1800's.

I'll tell ya what I know,If you look at the UK sites they list them as mounts,If you look at this colonial spanish site they list them as buttons.Either way the ones I've found have came from very early sites found with other objects that would go with dates being talked about on both the sites.I will add that the frying pan shaped one I found is thick made & very heavy for a button. So a coat full of them would weigh pretty good. But I've never had no one say one way or the other if they are buttons on mounts.
Here is the section on them on the Uk site many under this section for mounts with the same back with raised shank area & rusted off attachment.........
UK Finds Database - - - UKDFD

53 pages of them you'll see quite a few.........

Here is the spanish site that list them as buttons not sure where you are but here on the coast of the carolina's not out the question to be either spanish or british which is what makes it a tough call for me.......................

As far as my research tells me these were off 18th C Horses & yes losely a 'mount'. Better calling it horse furniture/decoration.

No tough call here, no Spanish in my area & we detectorist get them all over the UK, quite common.

I would tend to favor your idea for here as well. But the spanish where here even before the Brit's exploring.Saying all that though most things I find can be traced back to you guy's with a few exceptions that have no answer for.But yes I agree likely UK & likely horse related. Thanks for the help Cru.
