Need ID help on this unusual button

A friend found this recently in a field here in SE Virginia. I've seen one or 2 of these posted over the years, and believe it has something to do with a Caribebean Island, the East India Trading Company, or something like that. Can't seem to find it anywhere on the net so hopefully someone here will recognize it. From the backmark it appears to date to the early 1800s. Appreciate any help with the ID.

Hey Bill is that libertad wrote across the bottom?(Libertad, the Spanish word for "freedom", may refer to any of the following) if so I can't tell what's at the top.Maybe a straight on shot.Cool button though.

There is some info about it in this thread- I 'd be very interested to know the history though and the connection of Colombia to our Civil War. From the brief research I did it looked like they were having their own civil war in Colombia at about the same time. Great find!
