I'm new to this world of Metal Detecting. I've always wanted a MD and I just got a starter one! I found this rock in my back yard which used to be orange groves. Can anyone tell me what it is? It registered my detector on silver/coins. Please don't laugh at me, I am new. I have found my new hobby though! Very addictive!!Thanks Y'all:icon_thumleft:

It looks like what we call a "hot rock". You will find these occasionally. Sometimes just one other times they are everywhere. They sometimes ring up in the silver zone. Keep at it!

Welcome to the forum and hobby. It does look like a hot rock. They sometimes look like coal. Keep at it and you'll be finding goodies in no time. Good luck. Art

Added info.

Seeing that is your 2nd post at TreasureNet... welcome, SJohns. The What-Is-It? forum is the best place on the internet to get unknown objects CORRECTLY identified. But I must add, we are better at ID-ing manufactured objects than rocks.

Just in case you don't already know... the term "hot rock" is what we metal-detectorists call a rock which contains enough of an electrically conductive mineral or metal ore to make the detector react to it with a beep. Very frustrating... except for the extremely rare occasion when you've found something like a piece of high-grade silver ore.

I think T-Net has a Rocks-&-Minerals/rockhounding discussion forum. You'd have better luck getting your rock correctly identified there. It does seem to have a "granular" silvery look... which means a very knowledgeable rockhound could probably ID it.

Welcome to tnet!
You failed to mention what state you are in. Your item looks like a sample of lead ore. There are several mines south of Great Falls Mt. in the Monarch area that have similar samples of ore like yours.

You all are so very kind and welcoming! I am in central Florida. I appreciate you all taking the time to reply. I can't wait to find the kind of things y'all have!

Train tracks nearby the find location? Sometimes those train cars brought in a lot of foreign material to areas.
