I found this a few weeks back and my research has not found what this could be. Top to bottom its the exact size of a large cent and the wing will extend a 1/4 inch over the large cent on each side. I am wondering if it is Civilian or Military and from what era. Is it a Military medal? Maybe something to do with firemen because of the axe. IMG_0060 (Medium).webpIMG_0059 (Small).webp I hope someone here can help. One side has what appears to be S20 with a bar next to it and I can make out the other side. Thanks for looking.

Marty... are those numbers on the bottom thing there?

I don't think it's just an "axe" there in it's claws... I think it may be a "Fascia". A bundle of sticks with a hatchet on top - The symbol of Fascism. (See the back of the US Dime.)

Interesting piece...

Yea... it's Italian. LOL... Or Roman design, or many other countries... the Germans used all this as well but generally added the swastica.

Read this site... http://www.hist.uib.no/antikk/stamps/intro.htm

"Laurel is the symbol of the peace after victory. Oak and laurel · Eagle sitting on fasces, surrounded by wreath of oak leaves and laurel ... "

Possible something from the Mussolini days?

You could be right. the eagle is also holding 2 unidentified objects in his talons. can you make them out in the first picture?

La Beep I think you figured the writing on it. On the other side it does appear to say ROMA and allthough it is worn a bit I think it does saySPQR instead of S20. Very nice info. Thanks

I see the fasces... and the red circled thing I have no idea about... the eagle is only "holding" the fasces

Good call on the alpha/numeric La Beep... it's Italian or Roman symbolism.

Things are still marked SPQR today in Italy. The Roman standard was used by the Roman Legion Like a flag. True Roman standards were large and used by the Roman military. To my knowledge smaller ones were not given out. However because of national pride Roman items were reproduced though out the years. Your item looks like a key ring for a tourist. Age... I would think modern wwi to date. They keep thing simple during their colonial years beside France ruled them a lot of this time. Then the Kingdom period after the focus was on the king not the empire. Did this make sense, what I get for thinking after typing my answer.

Thanks for the info again you helped me alot. The item is silver and was very deep in a pounded park about 8 inches in super packed soil. I would guess ww1 or 2 era from the looks of it. Your knowledge is greatly appreciated.

I lived and detected in Italy for 6 years while in the Military. I learned a lot and have more to learn. I still have many bags of stuff to identify. Mostly iron Items from early 1700's but some maybe earlier. History on top of history, 3000 years worth.
