I found this button the other day.
It says 'HOLMEAD' and 'WASHINGTON CITY'
I looked online, but cannot find anything like this.
Thanks,

I don't know if this will help any but there is a Holmead street in Washington DC. Perhaps the street was named after a person and that person could be related to the button maker.

For what it's worth I believe it's "A. Holmead", if that helps narrow it down. Possibly a retailer, I'd guess 1840's?

An Anthony Holmead was one of the original proprietors of Washington Heights, which may be who the street is named for. And I see records of a Anthony Jr, who maybe owned a shop which had buttons made for them... Complete speculation, as I can't find anything solid.

Anthony & John Holmead appear in the Washington City Directory as early as 1822 - listed as having a dry goods store. They might be there earlier but this is the first directory year I have available. They both are listed for many years after having stores of some sort. Individually and with other partners.

There are these comments made by a user of the Fold3 site where I found the directory info:

Anthony and John Holmead were brothers and sons of Anthony Holmead, part of the Holmead family, one of the original landowners of Northwest Washington. less

James B Holmead was a brother of Anthony and John and also a son of Anthony Holmead, part of the Holmead family, one of the original landowners of Northwest Washington.
