Just found this in my yard this morning. It's probably brass (VDI +74), measures 7/8" in diameter. The back looks like "G.W. Simmons & Co." with some other markings - possibly S08 or 508. I thought it might be a more modern button until I searched the web for G.W. Simmons and found that company made buttons from 1850-1870. Can anyone provide more info or id that logo? I'm really curious now.

Thanks,

Jon

That would be a fun one to know what it stands for. I first thought it was just a fashion button but a closer looks shows what almost looks like the scales of justice and a pair of "B" intertwined. Faternal perhaps. Interesting find.

Yes sir I noticed that but I was wondering if yours said BOSTON.

My question : "Does it say BOSTON?"

Your answer: "Nope. ..."

This is your button. I took the time to draw it out on paint. You may want to reconsider because I think it fits.

BTW a very interesting button from an interesting company. I may search when I get a chance.

George W. Simmons & Co., Boston, Oak Hill, 32-37 North Street, also in Philadelphia. Jewelers, clothiers and dry goods from c. 1836 to c. 1887. Advertised army & naval officers iniforms on Jun 6, 1862 (Boston Post). In 1869-70, the firm became G.W. Simmons Bros. & Co. In 1881 firm was G.W.Simmons and Son; from 1882 it was G.W.Simmons & Co. Buttons probably are all post CW.

I can see Boston now - not numbers if you turn it the other way.

I don't believe there was ever a clothesline in that area.

The property was an apple orchard prior to 1950 - and then divided into many small parcels. Perhaps it was in a load of topsoil from somewhere else. There was actually a small bit of string still on the eyelet!
