So I bought a lot of IH pennies and received them today. Upon inspection of my coins I came across somthing very interesting and would love to share it with you guys and possibly get some help. I will be taking pics using a loupe and my normal cam as well. It's an 1891 penny in G-4 condition, however the date Is very strong. Please look at the very last pic and tell me what you guys think. I appreciate any feedback.

I know the pic is only so good, but through my loop the 9 Is all connected on the left side like an 8 is supposed to do. Just hard to tell because there's no documented errors on this date and coin, but the date itself is so strong, it's hard to deny. Wonder if it Is an error, what would that be called.. Diggin u should check out my 1929 wheatie it has a half doubled 9 that's very very clear. Thnx

Maybe it's a "closed 9" variety.. not sure on errors so let someone else decide that

Mornin diggin. Yea thats a nice f-12 coin with pretty distinctive details. However I can see the separation where the tail of the 9 stops. Mines all connected like a monkey tried to write an 8. I'm still researching and will try to get better pics. Man I love busting out the U.S mint!

Looks like a closed "9"--not sure if this is a known variety. Check that eBay auction that digging440yrs posted--maybe he'll post the link. BTW what is the full text of that footnote in the pic of an "employee stealing coins" (from the mint I assume)...sounds interesting.

Erik. Check page 112 in the 2012 edition of the red book. It's about the 1875 IH where the mint placed a secret dot on the coin to try to bust an employee apparently stealing coins. I wonder where the sceret dot is placed. They don't even have a price for that coin! New coin to hunt for in my book now! Thnx for noticing that.
