Hey freddy,

I'm thinking that part of a pretty fancy stove or fireplace grate. I've not found a match. I'm wondering if the dome is the US Capitol, the Crystal Palace, Philadelphia Centennial Building, or other...

Now I get that fact that it is one piece, what is odd, is the explanation of the reverse side considering its a cast.
Somehow you can reduce the amount of the material used if you have a negative/ positive in the cast?
does this attempt at a uniform thickness reduce cracking later on due to the on and off heating and cooling in a stove/ oven combination.

I missed that day of metallurgy class.

Someone please explain

Was out detecting my usual spot and found this piece of cast iron. Thought it was a pretty neat piece but I don't know anything and can't seem to find anything online. Any help would be grateful

I am in your same shoes. Lol. That is a very cool piece.

How thick is the cast iron? It looks like it could be the backing to a colonial fire place. These were cast iron and had many scenes casted into the mold. Google 18th century fire place back and you will see what I mean. I have dug pieces of them over the years at colonial sites and my buddy Beau dug 80% of one last year at one of my sites.

I'm thinking it could be part of a stove as well.I found a piece of iron around that same size last month in a yard where a machinist lived but my piece was not decorative like that but it was heavy as all get out.

Also looks like part of a small cast iron mantle used around the edge os small fireplaces. Tony

I think your spot on surf, It looks like a cast iron relief of the New York Crystal Palace in 1953. Could it be part of a cast iron bank? Duh! eighteen fifty three. That makes it old
