Need Help with Native American artifact....

I am posting this for a friend of mine, I did not find this but I did have it in my hand just before taking the picture. I have never seen anything like it and I hope that some of you have.

This was found in NE AL with a pile of sandstone that had been gathered for masonry work on a house. This piece was noticed before it was used and that is the only reason that it was saved. It is in two pieces. The bottom right is a quarter for size comparison only.

I detect and have never looked for indian artifacts at all so here are my questions - What is it? How old is it? Does it have any value?

My buddy said that he soaked it in bleach to bring out the detail....I know, that was the wrong thing to do but he did not know any better at the time.

Another thing you can try is- either taking really good pics of it- or the real thing, to the nearest university anthropology department ,
they may well be knowledgeable of the particular culture /time frame involved with it . Awesome find !
