This was dug at an 1800s church prepping for a new sidewalk. My dad found it.We are all wondering what it might be.He and his crew started sanding it with a palm sander to see what kind of metal it was (brass). My guess is it is some part of a door knob. Its got 2 nubs on it as if to lock it to something to twist/turn it.

Thanx for lookin, jimmy

How big is it? If it's between 1-1/2" and 2-1/4", it's probably a mid to late 1800's horse bridle rosette, and the two nubs on the back are where the loop has broken off. Compare to # D-49 near the bottom of the page at:

It is 2-1/8" wide and 3/4" thick. What you gave is a possibilty but the nubs dont appear to be broken and there is the center "thing",maybe a casting mark.
