They make a coiled rope design button so it could be a button with a wobbly shank.

UNIT NUMBER IF MILITARY --POSSIBLE -- OR MARKERS MARK OF SORTS

Zero chance of it being military. No sense in stamping a unit number on the BACK of the button where it would not be seen.

I have never seen a military button like that.

It is a civilian item, and judging from the design and style of back, I'd say early 20th c.

I agree most military numbered items would be "front marked " but in this case the design would prevent it from being on the front -- i also agree its, most likely civilian --- but on the off chance its military (slim i admit) --it would most likely be a unit number

Exactly. No way in hell a number on the back of a button would be a unit number. There are NO examples that I know of which support this claim! It'd be like saying that a benchmark on a CW buckle is a unit number. :D

manufacturers number

probably denoted to size, so they could do different size backs to the various fronts

it is a strange one though & the first I have seen, you would have thought it more common practice

Some French buttons were size marked in MM. great seal paris2.jpg

Here are some examples of wobbly shanks.

Believe it or not I'm quite sure there is a French military button that looks quite similar. Of course I would have no way to find it, but did get my attention at the time.

Did it have a regiment number on the back? :laughing9:

The French military button is very similar and I am a bit surprised. It looks like a cup of Jello lol. I think its Napoleonic Wars. Thanks IP I learned something. :icon_thumright:

The pics that I posted earlier in reply #4 are from Waterburys site and they are listed as Fashion Buttons.
