Need help with ID and Pat.

Found at an old home site, Thought it was a plain old grommet, ( find lots of those at home sites) but then noticed it had writing on it.
Tried search the patent date, but came up with nothing
Looks like it says Aug 26, 1884, or Aug 20.. I'm pretty sure about the 1884.
