I have tried to find a site to identify marks on flatware that is not silver. I found what appears to be a beginning attempt to make a ring or something similar with the top of a fork or spoon. It may have been plated at some time in its life but now it seems to be brass/copper/bronze with no hint of any previous plating. The Hallmarks - Maker's Mark - are in an odd place at the top and not lower down on the "shank" as on others I have found.

Any help on an ID or places to look would be appreciated.

The photo shows the marks upside down. What I think is the Maker's Mark is "IY" and the mark just barely visible at the end of the marks is a cross with the ends terminating in perpendicular lines.

Thanks,

Daryl

Close? And, If you notice, This utensil was curved too. I just straightened it. Marks are high on handle. Which I thought looked different as well. I find too many spoons but, never saw one with the marks there.

Hi Nick,

It's hard to tell what the letters are even when you can see them - "Y" "K" "V" - beats me.

Here's a closer shot.

Question my vision. I lost that long ago. And just for the record, the eyes aren't the first to go.

Thanks Nick,

I think it has been plated but it shows NO sign of any plating. That's odd. Just something to add to the mix. Did they make copper flatware?

Here is what I got from another forum that deals with silver and silver plated items and hallmarks.

They are the marks of John Yates (The use of an 'I' instead of a 'J' was normal at this period.) of Birmingham, England, a prolific producer of silver plate in the last quarter of the 19th century. He used several marks, including those shown in the British silver plate listings on this site; these are his pseudo hallmarks. Marks on silver plated items rarely mean anything but are usually peculiar to a particular maker and often identifiable.

Pseudo hallmarksmarks - Silver marks that are not regulated or administered by an officially sanctioned assay office or guild. Generally intended to imitate official Hallmarks.

So that's what I know

I got a cat here that likes to go into our bedroom and sit on the bed besides your nose and scratch himself,
so you know what I mean. Got out, put him outside to play, took a leak and could not sleep anymore.
That was at 04:15..... Its now 06:45.... So had to do something....

Its always funny to know that you are at about 9pm now!

Could you put me onto that that deals with silver and silver plated items and hallmarks?
Packed? Only 8 days left to do that!
