Wish I could say that I found this one. But it was recently discovered by a friend of my buddy Stan in the low tide muck near an early colonial site. It's just an awesome looking specimen. We've been trying to ID the seal but have not had any luck yet. I was hoping that some of you familiar with this sort of thing just might happen to recognize this particular crest or coat of arms. Please chime in if you can help. Thanks!

Until someone pipes in - I searched google and found other bottles with similiar configurations and they were identified as a Onion Wine Bottle. I can't tell on yours but the "crest" seems to be part of the bottle? The one's I found on the net were actually part of the bottle and were circa 1720 and up...

I removed the link when I realized there were not enough similarities in the seal.

That's an excellent link - thanks! It gives a detailed description of each name's family crest, but it would be nice if it also included an image. It was difficult to follow some of the language used in the crest descriptions, but its a good starting point. Thanks again.

bill d could we get a img of the whole bottle, looking at some bottles im not sure yours is an onion bladder
could it be a shaft and globe, maybe determining the yr of the bottle could narrow down the seal id

i wasnt aware these bottles were still made cool link GpSnoopy

That website is great - thanks! Love that bottle chronology section. I don't have any additional pics of the bottle to share, but its definitely an onion dating to c1700 give or take a few years. Definitely not shaft and globe although I have recovered several spouts from those style bottles at another site in that general area. If you get any other clues please pass along. Thanks again for your help.

In case this hasn't been identified in the eight years since it was posted, the coat of arms on the bottle is that of the Lee family of Stratford and various other estates in Maryland and Virginia, blazoned in heraldic terms as "Gules a fess checky or and azure between eight billets argent" (a red field with a checkered yellow and blue horizontal band surrounded by silver oblong blocks). The crest above the shield is a squirrel cracking a hazelnut or acorn.
