So here's a couple items from a property search with a metal detector. The buildings on the property are from the late 30s but have been continually

inhabited this entire time. Most finds date from the 40s to 50s but here's two items I'm having trouble pinning down date wise.
One is a helena rubinstein lipstick case, possibly from the 50s or 60s but I can't get it any closer than those dates. The other is a pair of potentially antique ember tongs, cast iron. There's no visible markings on them so I'm not finding much beyond that they're older than me. If anyone can get better dates on these items it would be great!

Neat finds. The Helena Rubinstein lipstick case is from their “Le Lipstick” range. Although they began selling lipsticks in 1957, that particular range was first introduced in 1969.
Hell yes. Any piece of info on little items like this is golden. I've located items here squarely dated from 1945 but this one was blurry. Thanks for the tip. I haven't posted all my finds, simply because they're boring, I've found old wrenches and coinage, an old well head, property marker, parts to a Ford 8N and less mentionable items which are of little meaning to me personally but I'm painting a picture of the properties history for my partner and having fun doing it. That lipstick case may have belonged to her great grandma and that's of some value!

I think I may have found your fireplace tongs...
though I don't think they were "original" with this set--IDK.

Can you tell if they're cast or wrought?

My best guesstimate is mid 20th C.
I could almost swear I've seen (or used) tongs like that, and they were definitely mid 20th.

I think it was for grabbing coal, because I can't see you picking up logs with that :dontknow:

Oh man, well this question yielded some juicy fruit! I suspected as much date wise, the houses on the property were built in 1938 and nearly all finds are from the 1940s forward. Oldest coin found is 1955. The thing about the area I live in is that the metallurgical history doesn't meaningfully begin until the mid 1800s and then only if you're hunting the very oldest sites. Older than that and it's either stone/pottery or something from the Spanish colonists which you'll not be finding without nighthawking the ruined Spanish missions heheh. It's fun making old connections for my partner to her families past. I've fished up some genuinely functional items that certainly belonged to her great grandparents and have definitely helped to add color to the properties history. Thank you thank you!!

I think they're cast, I haven't attempted to clean the rust off as of yet so if there's hammer marks they aren't apparent. I'll take a closer look at them tonight
