Going through some of my old finds and this one still has me stumped. Found it on the East coast at an 18th century house site. Looks like it is made of copper, roughly 2 inches by 2.75 inches and is thick but crudely made. On the back there are three prongs which make me think that it may be some kind of buckle. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard mdparsons! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

2nd - I'm not sure it is a boot heel plate. Can't find any that don't have nail holes to hold the plate in place?

It does have the shape of a heel plate but how would they have mounted it??

I dont think its a heel plate at all, Im leaning more tords it being a pedestal for a ladle or pan maybe a iron something like that...

I was thinking that maybe instead of using physical screws or nails to mount it to the bottom of the heel the raised portions on the back of it would instead be used to tack it on as one unit. Again, just a guess because all other examples I've seen use screws or nails.
