I can't read if the coin is from the reigh of Maria I (1777-1816) or from Maria II (1826-1828 and 1834-1853). If it's a 10 reis from Maria I, it would weigh about 11.4 grams and measure 35MM in diameter. Again, if it's a Maria I coin, the date and denomination would all appear within the wreath like: 17X99 representing a 10 ("X") reis coin.
Don.....

no I looked over the wreath with a magnifying glass I didn't see any date or denomination. The coin doesn't have that much wear (my pics are a little fuzzy). The coin is in about very good to fine condition so i would be able to see a date or denomination if their was one. On the front of the coin it does have a mint mark on the lower right hand side of the shield look to be the letter T. Thanks for all the help so far. I'm still wondering if this is indeed a reis or a token made to look like one any help will be greatly appreciated

I think what you've got is a 10 Reis coin from the Azores minted under Portuguese rule. The only one that has Maria on it is the 1843 issue. On the Ebay pics I found, the denomination is very weak. Likewise, the one in the Krause guide is a weak strike, which leads me to believe that may have been usual for this coin. The tilted figures on the bottom of the shield and the style of the wreath on the reverse seem to match this coin also.

To be precise, I should mention there's a 20 reis size of this coin also with the same basic design. The Krause guide mentions a 5 reis also, but doesn't have a picture, so the design may or may not be the same. The 5 reis should be 25 mm in diameter, the 10 reis is 30 mm and the 20 reis is 35 mm. All have the date of 1843 only.
