Found this button while metal detecting today. The location was a piece of private land located in New London, CT .

The button is about the size of a penny (See penny in photo for scale) and the front side appears to have some sort of bird pictured on it - maybe an eagle? However, the back of the button doesn't appear to have any writing or marking on it (See photo). I did a little research and found a similar button, supposedly from New York City, that has the same bird on it, but also has a circular design located just above the bird's head (my button doesn't have a circular design on it, just has the bird). Can anybody ID this button and tell me the year(s) it was produced?

Your button shows a portion (but not all) of the Great Seal of the United States. (US Army buttons since 1902 have showed the complete Great Seal... which has a small circle of clouds surrounding a group of stars, located above the eagle's head.) In addition to showing an incomplete Great Seal, your button has an iron/steel back, with what is called a "self-shank" loop -- which is not used on American military buttons. That form of selfshank back first appears in the early 20th-Century (and is still in use today -- see photo below). So, I think your button is a 20th-Century "military theme" Civilian "Fashion" button, used on blazers and civilian-usage imitations of military coats.
