Re: need help with buckles CW era?

Hey! JARMAN dug one of these at my site this past weekend. ;D For sure they are CW, but I can't tell you much about them. I'll leave that to all the smart people on this site. ;) I posted the pics under Today's Finds - Weekend dig with JARMAN.

Great finds!!!!

Re: need help with buckles CW era?

Those are civilian buckles often mistaken for CW Soldier bedroll buckles. I think they were once misidentified in a CW relics book and have been misidentified because of thet ever since.

You will get the answer you want here I'm sure...

I found this older post from Buckleboy in another topic:

Yes, SOME of these buckles ARE from the correct time period--mid 1800's. The whole debate arose from a CW reference that misidentified it over 20 years ago...by the time the error was acknowledged in the next volume, detectorists had already gotten the notion that this was a Civil War find firmly in their brains... Since these buckles--which are actually a civilian horse harness-buckle shield--were used until recent times (with little or no change in their basic design), it is difficult to attribute them to a specific time period--CW era or otherwise. These are frequently offered online for prices as high as 80 bucks, but they are sold by unscrupulous dealers for exaggerated prices to unsuspecting buyers. A NON-DUG, older example in nice shape might bring 10-15 bucks tops.

Regards,

Buckleboy

PBK- So, If I read that right, these heart buckles are CW era, but NOT used by soldiers? OK. I'll make a note in my Warman's book. ;D
Still a pretty piece. :D

Some of them may be of the period or even have seen Civil War service, as many civilian items did; however, they were also made and used in the postwar period, right on into the 20th century. For example, see items #4, #5, and #6 at:

Regardless of the vintage, it's a nice find! ;)
