I just dug this old brass tag and you can see it is in pretty bad shape. Can anyone tell me anything about the tag? I thought maybe a cow tag, but there are some letters on the tag and livestock tags just usually had numbers. I have dug some miners tags before and maybe it could be one of them, but the writing on the bottom left side of the tag throws me off. There seems to be an RCO then a space and an HA or Ma. It has a large number 247 on it, maybe a hotel key fob? I am located in central Pa. IMG_0001.webpif that is any help. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I believe it is a miners tag.

When miner 247 went into the mine, he left the tag outside, if something happened, then the authorities knew who was in the mine.

The bottom letters "should" identify the mine.

Best to you sir!

I'm not sure what kind of tag it is. I do see "CO. HA" at the bottom. I've also seen them used as telephone pole number tags.

On the topic of miners tags, that's was not their only use in mines. In some mines the miner would have a pocket full of them to hook on the ore carts he filled and sent out. That way each miner got paid for what he dug rather than his time spent in the mine.

Miner's tag, probably from a coal mine if you found it in Penn. Great find. Some of them can go for quite a bit if they have the name of the mine on them. Ive found only 1 before, its like yours but with just a number.

We do have a number of old coal mines in this area and that seems to be the major idea. Thank you for your help everyone.

Thank you. I only wish I could make out the writing along the bottom.
