I really need HELP on this one & you guys sure can be great at knowing or finding hard to find info so I'm turning to you guys!!

I can find only newer facsimile reprints of this book anywhere online for in the $40 range & most of these ads say this...

This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the original. Due to its age, it may contain imperfections such as marks, notations, marginalia and flawed pages. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions that are true to the original work.

Now some ads don't state this or that its a copy or "facsimile" but the cover doesn't lie as it's different from the original (as shown below) & the price is the same as the facsimile copies so that says it all.

Here's the title..

The Roman Conflict:

Or

Rise, Power And Impending Conflict

Of

Roman Catholicism,

As Seen In Ancient Prophecy, Ceremonial Worship,
Mediaeval And Modern History, with a Sketch
of Protestant Claims & Destiny

Illustrated

in steel and wood with many full-page plates of churches, temples, ceremonial rites, and portraits of popes, princes, cardinals, and martyrs of roman persecution.

(1878),

Rev. James Shaw

Anyone know a value or where to find a value? I'm stumped big time!

This one is mine & the one I need a value on

This is the newer $40ish facsimile, don't get em confused, If it's $40ish I guarantee it's not the right one! Both have green with gold covers so don't let those words throw you off either.

Looks like you've found a real gem of a book! :occasion14:

Did some online searching using a number of search engines, and
did find a a copy of the 1878 edition, which I believe is the
actual true First Edition, First Printing of the title.

WorldCat shows only 1 original copy (out of 4) in a library, and so far I've
come up with a big goose egg as to what the actual value might be. The
title is out of copyright, and that's why you're seeing the current reprints.
The prices for these copies have no bearing at all on the value of the original
copy you have.

Inspector: I'm glad to see you're doing the needed research on this title.
As for value, it could be quite substantial to the right collector. Best suggestion
I could make is to make some inquiries with collectors of Catholic works, or
better yet consider a quality auction house like Sotheby's.

The title is considered as "Scarce", meaning there's damn few of them around,
and even less available on the market. I did find one copy of the 1878 edition on
Abe, and they were asking about $50 US for it, but that is not any indication of
actual market value for your copy as the seller may not even have a clue about
what they are selling.

Nice find!

Thanks a bunch Dizzy!!!! I really appreciate your time, thought & effort!

I'm 100% sure the book on abe is the copy or reprint, There is NO difference in the 2 besides the cover! The hardcover facsimile has the 1878 date not a newer reprint date "at least so I have been told" thus why it is considered a facsimile not a copy (the pages are exact duplicates of the originals including the original dates & so forth). The cover is the only way to tell the difference for sure! The softback reprint/copy I've found available does have a 2007 date.

BTW Ive found about 6 for sale on different sites that make you think ok this is it & with further inquiries they have all turned out to be the reprint / facsimile.

I'm in Indiana only a few hours away from Notre Dame wonder if anyone there would know something or someone? It sure could be a good place to start? Tho I believe this book was most likely burned by Catholics, it's very controversial, Shaw the author was a Lutheran or Protestant not a Catholic.

My worldcat search returned this & #3 is not the right book or well it's not the original book. And #5 is just a digitized version (I think). The others are impossible to tell what version they actually are as they don't show any pix but that still just leaves those 3 as possibilities in North American libraries.

1. Catholic Theological Union Bechtold Library Chicago, IL 60615 United State... (***This is the best bet as to probably being an original***)

2. United Library Evanston, IL 60201 United States

3. University of Toronto, Robarts Library Toronto, ON M5S 1A5 Canada ***Wrong or different Version***

4. Oklahoma Christian University Tom & Ada Beam Library Edmond, OK 73013 United States

5. Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center (HRC); University of Texas at Austin University of Texas Libraries Austin, TX 78713 United States ***it's just a digitized version from what I understand*** Tho they still might have the original put away?

Also found this one on abe for $75 shipped.. It claims to be a 1st edition it's in the UK but again no pix of it.. http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?an=Shaw,%20Rev.%20James&tn=The%20Roman%20Conflict%20or%20Rise%20Power%20and%20Impending%20Conflict%20of%20Roman%20Catholicism%20Illustrated%20in%20Steel%20and%20Wood%20with%20Many%20Full-Page%20Plates&cm_sp=mbc-_-ats-_-all

Seems as if I'm the only one updating this thread.. After talking to some "book people" & after hearing what their research revealed I have learned there are some undocumented &/or lightly documented copies of this book that are indeed exact duplicates (AKA facsimile) of the original down to the original first edition date(s) inside. The original cover however was never known to have been duplicated.

Made me think, how do I know I have an original if there are exact duplicates out there minus the original cover? I don't know for 100% sure what the original cover even looked like... Well #1 it was in a box full of similar dated books that a few of em have value in the $30-$40-$50 range (which really proves nothing) & #2 is I can't find a picture of a cover like this one has, I only find images of the reprint, the copy, the facsimile & so on. I have found no less than 4 images of 4 different covers on this book & none of those covers are anything like this cover. This is an 1800's book without any doubt & the earliest reprint/facsimile of this book was in about the 1920's or 1930's (so I was told). With the lack of cover pictures nor any with this cover for sale it leads me to believe (along with the other clues I mentioned earlier) that this one is the real deal. It wasn't like 10 companies copied this book, only a few did & still do.

This book has been & still is driving me nuts!
