Need help with a silver hallmark

I found a silver ring at a site dating back to the late 1800s, but I suspect this ring is much more recent than that. Does anyone recognize this hallmark? Appears to be a wolf or dragon facing left, with "MMR" underneath.

Welcome to Tnet from Toronto Wobbleshank! :hello:

If you could also post a couple of pics of what your ring looks like and let us know where in the world you found it? :icon_scratch:

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks, Dave!

Here are shots of the ring. The tiny hallmark is visible on the exterior face of the ring in the second shot. I found it in a schoolyard in Minnesota.

I can't help much on the mark since I don't recognise it... and if it's a modern mark I won't be much help anyway. I have a few observations though.

The figural creature appears to have a mouthful of sharp fangs and has ears so I don't think it's any kind of eagle, nor a horse. There does seem to be a mane though, so 'wolf' (or mythical) would make the most sense.

It's frustrating when letters are grouped like this, since you can't reliably tell in what order the 'MMR' letters are intended to be read. The 'R' looks a little larger than the two 'M' letters and may be intended to be read first as 'RMM'.

It also looks like there are two smaller letters above the 'beast' at the top of the lozenge. Perhaps SA, SM or SH ?

Thanks for the warm welcome! I remain stumped. If there are letters above the wolf/dragon/horse/eagle head, I can't make them out even with a jeweler's loupe. Good point about the order of the letters. I even wondered if they could be "Mr. M", but nothing has turned up on Google.

With some enlargement/enhancement, I believe the letters at the top of the lozenge may be 'SM' in a kind of inward-sloping manner:

Still don't recognise the mark, but be aware that on some modern jewellery and also on vintage native jewellery there can sometimes be a prominent mark for the distributor/outlet/retailer and a less prominent one for the actual maker.

Thanks very much for following up Wobbleshank.
Looks like you've already received some great info from the other members here.

Personally, I never had any luck with sports fields, that's probably why I stick to farm fields. :laughing7:

Did you test it? Maybe it's another metal? Like titanium? Or even stainless steel? Just spit balling.

It could be a wolf. It bears some resemblance to many of the "Lone Wolf" designs that some unaffiliated bikers wear.
