hello! i have been a rockhounder since i was a child, but i am just now trying to learn their identifications ;)

i have a vast collection, and i am hoping some of you can help me figure out what is it i have found!

i will start with what i *think* might be smoky quartz.
FYI: i live in and collect from southern Ontario, Canada - but these were found alongside a train track, so they could've come from a quarry anywhere, really...

as you can see, some are darker than others. they were mixed in with a bunch of grey and white quartz.

any help is greatly appreciated :)

Compare hardness with a known quart, can't tell enough to make a guess. Do they look kinda greasy?

not greasy, at least i don't think so, but i'm not very familiar with identification standards. definitely as hard as quartz - i was striking pieces with a HAMMER and they would not break ;)

Hardness is scratch resistance. Not how brittle it is. :)

Looks familiar, found south of you.

Looks a lot like the chunks in a rock I found in a glacial deposit in Ohio, The chunks are a crystal of some kind, can see into it with a strong light. Don't know for sure what it is. This rock also has magnetic areas and a red crystal cluster I was told looked like garnet. Maybe that info will help identify your find.
