Found this yesterday and need some help with ID. It measures 4 1/2" long and has some kind of handle on that goes up and down. Also has a threaded area about 1 1/2" from the top threaded area on stem measure's 1" long. Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing it goes to a steam whistle ? What ever it is , I like it !

It may be that, as it is clearly a needle valve. My guess would be the needle mechanism of a drip oiler.

when you move the handle does it move the inner needle part?

Nope it's staionary. I was thinking some kind of compass navy ship drawing device myself but I have no clue.

It's stationary probably because it's siezed. I pulled a more modern version off one of my hit and miss engines so you can get a genral idea how the drip oilers work.

They were spring loaded, usually with the spring held by c clip on the lower rod. (notice the spring pattern on the lower outer shaft of your's. There is probably a groove on the inner pin which is under the outer shaft now). There were various adjustment fitting which threaded onto the outer shaft. Your's is threaded to accept these fittings. The lever on the top is cammed to contol the shut off of the needle. (that's all it does). The rate of flow is controlled by the depth the whole arrangement travels into the seep hole of the brass and glass housing that contains it.

It is the needle valve for a drip oiler called a swing top. The lever on top was lifted and swung left or right to adjust the oil flow. If it's for sale let me know, I NEED ONE. tony

Basically the same principle Tony; turn to adjust flow and a cammed shut off. The difference is that mine is worth about 20 bucks, and when you put your's together your's will be worth about $500!

Johnnyi, you have been a great addition to the "What Is It" forum. As older members move on, we need to keep replacing them with new fresh minds. This combined effort makes TN the best place to identify the unknown. And after about 5 years, I am still amazed. :icon_thumright:

Perhaps the older members have not moved on, they were just slowly chased away by the new clique of self appointed overseers. There's an obvious lack of participation by the "older members" that have been around for a lot more years than the "new fresh minds".

I've received some PM's from some of those so called "older members" that are not in agreement with the few, new junta, participants that ignore the ID's and information and lack of appreciation provided, and choose, instead, to just blow smoke up their self serving arses.

Enjoy!

I noticed the lack of participation by some of the older members but I hadnt noticed anything else. I assumed they were out doing better things, like metal detecting. I sure hope we dont lose any members.
