Trying to help a friend with his buckle .. He says, "What kind of buckle is this and any idea how old? It measures right at 3 inches long x 2 inches wide at the widest point. Photo's make it look like it was japanned, but it isn't.
I think it may be a harness buckle of some sort, but I can't find anything to match in my books. Any help or thoughts appreciated."

Hi Mud Hut; I believe it is a belt type buckle from the 1820 - 1840 or so. I don't think it is 1700's. Good luck. Nice one. PEACE:RONB

Everybody must concur with Barker's assessment on this one. I'll mark it as solved.
