Need help to unlock meaning

Hello,

We found this iron rod about 22 feet down our dig. One of the diggers tried to pull it out but could not do it. Accordingly it was very difficult to pull out. They went on digging until they were able to pull it out 4 feet later. The rod is about 5 feet high and had some markings on the side. Do these marks mean something?
Would really appreciate some info.
