need help to id this button

Scovill Mfg. Co. is the same backmark I have on many of my CW eagle buttons. It seems that yours is a general issue Union button (unless there is a letter on the shield). If it is nickel-sized, it is a coat button. If smaller than dime-sized, a cuff.

a plain sheild means general enlisted mans button --general issue-- if a letter is on the sheild its a officers or "branch" button---- differant letters tell what branch "I" for infantry is one ---A for artillery --C for calvary

Just a point of clearification.. the letter on the shield did not belong to just officers... enlisted wore them too...
