I have an old sword that my dad bought for me when I was real young and recently came across them and out of curiosity started to research it a little and got hooked! So now 8 straight hours later I am still reading and hunting for precise details on this piece but I am giving in and putting this out there cause I need ya'lls help and a good bit of you seem very educated on this topic so I am really hoping someone can tell me if this is from the masonic knights of templar and what all the symbols signify as far as degree and commandery and council etc. also there is a makers Mark that says "Ames Sword Company Chicopee Miss" but it is not stamped as all others I have seen but rather appear to be acid etched on. Because of this I am not able to track it back date wise by following the Ames Company history. About 5 years back when Antique Road Show came through town I took the sword up there and they were many people who seemed very intrigued by it and gave me some info on it but just basics and that it was probably worth between $1,200 to $2,000 which I'm not all that concerned about the price since I plan to keep it but I would very much like to know about it's history and anything else anyone can tell me. image.jpg

Best of luck

Yeah I have done ALOT of that here lately...as in like the past 8 hours! I have been searching and hunting through every masonic sword site I believe that has ever been made. I just cannot seem to find the right site to identify the information that I am looking for, which is mostly what all the symbols mean and what council and degree an so on that this guy was, whoever he is. Also I really want to obviously find out the time period but I cnnot match the makers mark to any specific time span, which should be easy considering Ames Sword Company switched hands so many times.

I would say it's a Scottish Rite sword ~ Rose Croix....I'm a member of the Blue Lodge but the Maltese Cross and the Red Cross (Rose Croix) are definitely Scottish Rite.

The company was founded in 1774 at their factory in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. It was continued by the founder's son by Nathan Peabody Ames (1803-1847) and produced its first swords for the US Government in 1832.[2] A foundry was added, to cast cannon and bells. The historic sword and armament factory, located at 5-7 Springfield Street in Chicopee, Massachusetts, was built in 1847.[3] The structure was added to the National Historic Register in 1983.[1]

Nathan P. Ames was in partnership from 1829 to 1847 with James Tyler Ames.

the price you were quoted seems odd....these are not all that uncommon, I have a friend that has one just like yours.

Now that you mentioned Knights of Columbus I think you are right. There is a sail with a cross on it on the sword which could be KofC.
