Found this button the other day, and had to dig down about 9 inches to get it. It is a South Carolina button but I can't find out anything about the maker on the back. The name on the back is Schuckmanns and it was made in charleston s.c. Thanks for any help you can give

"Phillip Shuckmann, Charlestown, SC, 271 King St. Clothier and fancy goods dealer from 1856-after 1900. The firm was not listed in military goods until 1878. However, a 2-pc SC button with small impressed letters has been dug from a CW site. This suggests that Schuckmann may have handled SC buttons before or during the civil war. Other Schuckmann- marked buttons having large letters appear to be post CW"
This came from McGuinn and Bazelon's book titled "American Military Button Makers and Dealers: Their Backmarks and Dates" A clear picture of the backmark would help ID your button but you may have a pretty rare one.
