If you don't want to clean it (which I totally understand) you could try putting a piece of tracing paper over it and do a rubbing with a pencil. It looks like there may be enough texture left of the date to make a decent paper copy.
I agree with you though, it does look like a 0, very nice find!

The only way you are going to be able to get a date is to try rinsing it under tap water or either soaking it in warm water and maybe a little dish detergent. I have a program that will magnify an object without losing much resolution and I wasn't able to pull any readable info off the coin except it looks like it has an S mint mark. I enlarged it to 5000X3750 and here is the results. Good luck but I think you are going to have to get a little of the gunk off first.

While it would be nice to have a 1909-s Lincoln but it is my opinion that the coin is a 194_s cent based on 2 things.......

Early Lincolns (teens-twenties) had a much lower relief design on the obverse (the bust) and your coin appears like a much higher relief bust more common in the 40's.........and secondly, I believe I can actually see the 4 in the date, especially the left hand corner of the 4....see how the angle comes to a point?

Just my opinion.......let us know if you clean it up a little :-)

HH all!

Greg

I kept putting it in soap and scrubbing some of that grub off and it appears to be a 1940 S... oh well maybe i'll find the 1909 S next time

We had our fingers crossed for ya..Maybe next time..HH

Yeah most coins in washington State are going to be 1940's to 1950's wheat pennies. I did dig a 1934 wheatie two years ago at a boy scout camp with my tracker IV metal detector. That was when I was not really into metal detecting. Now I am obsessed with Metal detecting and Coins :)
