I am guessing it's part of a sewing machine .

Yep for sure from the sewing machine. It would be placed on top near where the needle goes up and down. Found one last season with the same bevels and patent dates. Singer machine. Circa late 1800's. Nice Id fellas.... :thumbsup: jgas

Here is a Howe machine that I pulled out of a scrap yard years ago from 1861. You'll notice the brass tag on the bottom right. You'll notice the older tags were round and didn't include a patent number, only a date. (sorry, I see the first scan was too large. On the right the original machine had no wheel (the wheel was underneath0 and the patent disk was mounted on the lower right of the base) Press the link beneath the picture and you'll get the full image.
