Southern_Boy asked me to post this. He needs a bit of help ID'ing this object.

I was walking a stone fence in Tioga County, New York in the fall. Which saw action againts the Iroguoi Nation and had a few colonial battles fought in the area I do believe. The scenery was wonderful and I had no luck in finding anything of value beyond some clad when my detector went off! I used my genuine WW II entrenching shovel and started to dig, my detector indicated it was deep at least 10 inches I finally saw my target at around 12 inches down. Originally I thought a solid shot cannon ball till I pulled it up and then I noticed the stem on it. This item also is flatish at the base. It weighs in at around 4 to 5lbs and appears to be solid iron.

kinda looks more like the knob on the friendly end of an old cannon. i dont know what they are called, but i think the ones on ships cannons were used to mount ropes for recoil

It seems we had something similar posted here. Could it be a bell clapper?

I hadn't even thought about that.

Jeff is out detecting now, but will see if he can get another pic next to something else to give us a size.

We had these old grain scales back on the farm that had weights that sure looked like your find. They are about as big as a large pear. see picture.

it might be an ornamental ball off the top of an iron fence post. I found one once and thought it was a cannonball until i noticed the flat spot.
