This was found on a farm where the original home stood. The grave yard on the property has just a few stones with markings and the rest are marked with rocks. A few dates that are still readable date 1700's and 1800's. I will try to post more pictures after some more detailed cleaning. I can see some writing in the banner under the shield and it appears to start with the letter S. It also looks like a number 1 or roman numeral 1 at the top.

Sorry I'm having trouble uploading the photos. I will try again when I have better cell service.

Ok only two pictures uploaded both of the front. I will try to post the back when I get a few minutes.

Thanks,

Matt

You are right after a little more tender loving care of just beginning the cleaning process, I found that it is a button just don't know much about buttons and I hope the knowledgeable and respected on the site can assist me in its identification. It has what looks to be gold in color flakes still attached to it front and back. Inside the shield it looks like a Lion standing up walking and the same Lion on the top standing up walking. Still haven't made out what is written in the banner below the shield. Updated photos.

Here is what I just found :

"These stunning buttons were crafted by the master artisans of The Waterbury Button Company of Connecticut. Each button features the Two Lions Crest."

In this ad, the buttons are clearly modern replica. I cannot tell you more (yet?) about an antique and original version of these. The Waterbury Button Company seems to have been producing buttons since 1812... Your button looks old. There is a pretty good chance you have the original version of these replica. But what uniform would that button go on... I have no idea !

Legend of the button would be Spectemur Agendo which would mean : "Let us be judged by our acts".

Taltahull, you hit the nail on the head on this one. Thank you very much for identifying the button for me. If it wasn't for the great people of treasurernet, it would be a lot of us scratching our heads everyday.

To the best of knowledge and research no one has lived on the farm since the late 1800's. The farm has belonged to my family for the last 15 years and since I got back into MDing I haven't located anything modern not even a pull tab.

Thanks again for your help and HH,
Matt
