Found this big chunk of rust the other today. I put this in todays finds, along with some other items, and no one responded to this. Was hoping someone here could help. I found this near the waters edge of a bayou. At first I thought it was a jar lid when I was digging, but there was no jar. It kinda looks like it could be a small gun breech, but im not real familiar with old guns/cannons. Can someone tell what this is, or might be.

I've collected guns for over 60 years. Never saw anything close to this. I'll bet it has nothing to do with a gun?

Break some of the crud off it and we can get a better idea? It looks like moose poop now.

Cheers

I hate "finding moose poop" or any other poop while detecting...

Especially on the bottom of my shoe.

Ok, no gun, got it.. Pipe dreams... I found it by the edge of the bayou. It was not a real trashy area. it is definitely iron.
It looks to me that it is some kind of round seal, that was possibly hinged to another object at one time. The long rod shaped the to the right looks like it could have once been attached to the hinge and was a the locking mechanism.
I just thought it looked peculiar and that maybe someone might have known what it was.
The gun part was just me wishing I had something really neat, like the breech end of a small breech loading cannon.
I recently dug a slick SLQ and a 1812 era NY Militia eagle flat button from this site.
Guess I will have to try to clean a little and repost some better photos.
Im still new to the relic hunting, and would just hate to throw something of historical importance in the trash pile.
Thanks.
