I think it's part of a smashed-out plume holder... helmet type. I'll look for a pic.

Thanks Jim,that is what I thought when I first seen it too.If it isnt is awful close.There are some differences but I think we are in the right ballpark.

I agree - but like buttons of that era there are a zillion varieties. I think you have an authentic era piece... an awesome display piece too!

I ditto that!!The unfortunate thing is......there was no other signal in the area?We will have to do some more lookin' though.On a side note I took the guy I bought a detector from to a spot I had hunted a couple of times and he digs the Big Eagle that goes on the front of that helmet!!!He turned out to be a real scum bag.......I wish I would have taken it from him
