Need help on dating this eagle button!

This button was found at the foundation site that we think was a school or homestead. It has an eagle with a shield and spread wings. Is it an army button? As you can see from the pictures the back has corroded away, so there isn't any other marks on it. I'm keeping a ledger of all the finds from this place and like to know as much info on this stuff as possible. Any information would be appreciated and thanks for looking!! sandcreek4
