I went out today for some MD and I found two buttons both flat.Could anyone help out on the age of the button on the right. It has a Eagle with a anchor in a shield and back mark of "standard rich colour" on the back,it looks to be plain on the front. We also found a large ball civil war button,a spencer cartridge complete, two 3 ringers and a shot pistol bullet. There was a old home site there also but i would like to know if that button is a civil war flat button.Any info on the button with the eagle as a back mark would be of great help.THANKS!!!!!!

British made civilian button dating closer to the War of 1812. I have found two.

They must have been widely used, I got one or two and I am in Southern New Jersey, IP found his way up north  , and you evidently found yours in the South. There have been a few others of them posted here that I can remember. Clean it up good, makes a nice one for a display. Tice has a photo of very similar button and says it is circa 1820, but he says it is a US Navy device??

What's funny is in the estimated 5000 buttons I have found from all over the two eagle backmarks were found along the same river, but probably a mile apart. I plan to get into a few more fields in the area to see if it was just a fluke or more will be found.

I think he means device as in the design and not the use, if that's what you are referring to.

Agreed on the device as in design and not the use, it is listed under Civilian buttons.
