Hey there,
I'm pretty new to this forum and I'm a total newbie to iron relics! I only bought my metal detector (Fisher F75) 3 weeks ago. I haven't used my metal detector on both spots below, but I will soon. I simply walked around the land to look for abnormal stuff on the ground.
So there's the situation. According to an old map, the land where I'm looking (which has never been metal detected before) includes 3 destroyed colonial buildings (1 house, 1 cowshed & 1 barn). They were built around 1660. They later got destroyed in 1760 during the war (Canada). At that location, most of the houses were destroyed by fire (so I expect to find burned wood), and the foundation of the buildings could have been a mix of rocks with mortar.
I've been looking to find the buildings location for the past month (I'm a student in vacation so got plenty of time to do that). So far, I found a few interesting stuff. Please note that nothing was built there between 1949 & 2018 (I checked the aerial photo of the land 1949-today and there was no buildings). There's 2 different spot where I found interesting stuff:
Spot number 1:
- There's a bunch of pieces of burned wood on sitting on the floor, from 1980-2018 there was no fire made at this spot.
Size of BW on the picture: Length of 1.18 inches (30mm) / Height of 0.787 inch (25mm) / Width of 0.39 inch (15mm)
Note for burned wood: Small pieces of wood like that are on the ground in an area of 25 feet by 25 feet, exactly where I find the mortar & where I found the 2 pieces of metal that you'll see below. The usual dimension of those pieces of burned wood is 1.5 inches by 1 inch. However, I did find 2 bigger pieces (6 inches by 3 inches).
- I found some mortar on the floor at this spot. There was nothing built there between 1949-2018. I really don't know if this is recent or old mortar.
Piece of Mortar 1
Size of Mortar 1 on the picture: Length of 8.26 inches (210mm) / Height of 1.18 inches (30mm) / Width of 08.26 inches (210mm)
Piece of Mortar 2
Size of Mortar 2 on the picture: Length of 1.57 inches (40mm) / Height of 0.787 inches (20mm) / Width of 0.787 inches (20mm)
Piece of Mortar 3
Size of Mortar 3 on the picture: Length of 1.18 inches (30mm) / Height of 0.157 inch (0.4mm) / Width of 1.18 inches (30mm)
Note for Mortar on spot 1: There's a few pieces of mortar laying on the ground on an area of about 25 feet by 25 feet. Most of the mortar that I found are small pieces of it (2 inch by 1 inch). However, there's like 2-3 pieces a bit bigger ( 8 inches by 6 inches)
- I also found 2 weird pieces of metal. I only got 1 out of the ground, any hint about them?
As you can see here the item was stuck in a root, I had to cut the root in order to get it.
So this piece of metal is pretty much a circle with 2 square shaped holes on each side, and there could be a third hole on the front or some kind of buckle system. Furthermore, I think the long thin piece of metal that you can see on the first few pictures could be some kind of barrel hoop, and the other circular thing could be an animal collar.
Size of the piece of metal 1 on the picture (looks like a barrel hoop, long and thin): Length of 20 inches / Height of 2 inches / Width of 0.04 inch (1mm).
Size of the piece of metal 2 on the picture (the circular one with the squared holes): Circle diameter size of 6 inches / Width of 0.12 inch (3mm).
Spot 2:
- At this second spot, I also found some mortar on the ground.
Mortar 1 (the mortar is attached to a rock)
Size of Mortar 1 on the picture: Length of 6.69 inches (170mm) / Height of 2.36 inches (60mm) / Width of 3.15 inches (80mm).
Mortar 2
Size of Mortar 2 on the picture: Length of 4.72 inches (120mm) / Height of 1.18 inches (30mm) / Width of 2.36 inches (60mm) .
Note for the second spot mortar: There are some small pieces of mortar (2 inch by 2 inch) & bigger ones (6 inches by 3 inches). The area where I find mortar is about 7 feet by 7 feet.
So there are my questions:
- Do you know if anything included in the pictures could be from 1600-1760?
- What are the 2 iron items? Any ideas?
- Could the mortar be old? What's the differences between old & new mortar?
- Those finds were laying on the ground (but the piece of metal was mostly underground stuck in a root). This spot was never searched. It's located in a rural area. Is it realistic to find stuff from 1600-1700 laying on the ground?
If you have suggestions to find the buildings let me know
N.B. Sorry if my english seems off, my main language is french!
Thank you for your help!
