Need help in identifying Signet Ring

Found this signet ring in the backyard of a friends house. The house was built before 1900 and has quite a bit of history. I know these type of rings were at one time popular (I can barely remember the old timers wore them).
I tried finding info on the Internet, but didn't get much, just general info.

Can anyone provide more info on it? Inside is heavily worn and can barely make out the word sterling.

Looks like a Roman soldier..they were pretty popular in the 40's

by the looks of the roman face its concave.Could it be a wax seal ring ?Nice find!

I remember that insignia.

Early sixties but the ones I'm talking about were carved in Onyx.
