I found this coin last weekend in NC close to a river. Initially I thought it was a cob and still very might be. The only definitely cob coin i have is about the same size, very crude, good bit thicker about twice this size. This coin has been cut on alot and worn a good bit. Probably a long shot but just curious..
great save, good luck on the ID

I don't remember ever seeing a Spanish cob coin (or any coin) with a Cross Barbee (or Barby) design like on the OP's post. As such, it may not even be Spanish. IDK. Looking forward to reading its full description.

That's what I'm thinking

NICE GOING :) YOU DID GOOD !!!

The closest I can get is Philip IV 1/2 reale (1621-1665). A similar (far from identical) coin is in the 'Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center'. The description of the reverse reads (in part) "The Jerusalem cross, signifying the unity of Church and State, on both coins has ball-shaped ends, a style which indicates that these coins were minted for Spain in Mexico City. (emphasis added).
But note, the western end of the Jamestown coin has a Barby (Barbee) point, not a ball-shaped end--similar to the OP's coin.

Awesome!!! Congrats!!!

Very interesting find! Good luck of the further ID process. One of the interesting things about this hobby is the need to include history, both for site research and to identify a find. As a SoCal resident, I am jealous of the many historical finds by those back east. It seems like one just needs to turn on a metal detector to find something interesting beneath your feet. Now, back to the local clad and tab pulls...

Most interesting that it has what appears to be an 8 pointed star around the cross. This is the most similar that I could find:
