Definitely check out the Florida laws regarding artifacts before you pick anything up. I know they are really strict about diving and getting things out of certain areas. I do see some guys who post on other boards who hunt the beaches and find things though.

Many Indian camps were along rivers and lakes. Most of the rivers and lakes in Florida have Indian names. When river and lakes are low can be very promising. I have dug in the high banks along rivers and the rivers edge and done quite well.

Fresh plowed fields are always good but a lot of brockenhearts. Always after a good rain look in the trenches and runoff areas. Clay dirt roads have always rewared me!

Find midden areas and you will find many points and pottery shards / stay away from Indian mounds [sacred] and against the Law.

Get yourself a shell sifting basket like they sell on the coast for collecting shells or sand fleas. Go down to the old boat ramp at Montverde on the west shore of Lake Apopka. Get some Hefty yard bags, put your foot into one and slide into a good wading shoe then duct tape them into a cheap version of hip wader. Lake Apopka is polluted even though a restoration project is making the water cleaner. Wade out from the ramp and start scooping the bottom into a floating sifting box. Its back breaking work but it can be rewarding. Lake Apopka had a large Indian population for hundreds of years. And I've seen beautiful arrowheads and spear points that came from the lakeshore over the years. Try some of the farm fields between plowings on CR 448A/ Duda Road, be sure you get permission.
Good Luck.

Look around the mouths of armadillo burrows. Their claws are so strong they actually dig right into the shell middens. I've seen tons of pottery sherds tossed out by 'dillos. Knowing now what I didn't know then, I'd guess some of the shell pieces may have been tools as well. Of course you can't mess with the mounds but the 'dillo burrows would be worth checking out anywhere else.
