Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
Here is what I am after:

< $1000.00 US
VDI
Can do beach surf (waterproof) as well as non sand/water.
Has discrimination (auto and manual).
Has a notch filter.
Has a fast to super fast recovery rate.
Has coil choices after the initial purchase.
Does auto and manual ground balancing.

Besides those a large view screen would be very nice but not mandatory.

I mainly want jewelry and coins so I guess that means a general MD???

Thanks for any help offered in what make and models are out there that will meet my needs.

Oh, I forgot to add to that list auto and manual ground balance.

That doesn't have a VDI which is one of the mandatory things I am after but that does look like a nice unit for one without though it didn't hit one of my other mandatory requirements of under 1000 USD.

You are pretty much out of luck with your requirments. If you want a machine that does it all on a saltwater beach and in the dirt for $1,000.00 you are not going to find one - because it does not exist. The best beach machines, both VLF multi-freq and Pulse Induction, don't have cute little screens - sorry.

Seems rather archaic to me in this day and age of a digital world.

Seems to me like maybe two detectors are better than one. Maybe buying used will get you into the ball park. Right now any detector
is better than none, look for a detector from one of the major manufacturers and see what part of the hobby appeals to the most.
Park hunting, beach hunting, nugget hunting all take slightly different detectors. For a waterproof detector, the Garrett AT Pro handles a
lot of different conditions, but is not a diving detector. Putting aside waterproof, there are lots of detectors that will get you started.
See if there is a local dealer to talk to and try out a few models.
You didn't mention what part of the country you are in, also talk to some of the dealers who are on treasure net.
Good luck

Maybe I should have said water resistant? All I am looking for is a coil and some length of arm that can go under the water not the entire machine. This is why I was asking for something that can do beach surf since I will never take it out below my ankles.

My wife passed away on Feb 7, 2013 so my area is about to change if the realtor in Florida gets the house I am after. So, the beaches around Pensacola, FL and the surrounding area with a side trip to TN every once in a while.

Most detectors have a water resistant coil and lower shaft. I am sure some TNet people in Pensacola can chime
in with their favorite detectors for that area.

I hope so. My old detector was just a Bounty Hunter BFO from when I was a kid and after an Apartment fire in 2006 I had no room and finally gave it to the Goodwill since I only ever used it to find a dropped screw or nail (wasn't much good for beyond that).

I like the looks, and what I have read, of the F5/F70/F75/AT Pro/Cortes (with SEF coil but the VDI is a tad too basic for me)/XTerra 705 and really salivating over the GTI 2500's Treasure Vision but the GTI 2500 is being phased out I just read. Is there nothing else out there that will Treasure Vision besides the GTI 2500? The rest of the 2500 is meh as the more recent models have more of what I am after. I absolutely love the VDI on the E-Trac and the ability to program the thing but 1500-1600 USD is way over my limit unless I buy a smaller model and find something worth a lot of money, heh.

Kellyco is in Florida and sells all the brands you would want. Find them online.

Yep, know them but was hoping to get some unbiased opinions. I know what I want is the E-Trac but, as I said earlier, the pocket book says no for a year or so until I am firmly moved in plus any local people chiming in would be extremely helpful.

If you want to search the dry saltwater sand as well as the wet you are better off with a totally waterproof detector since salt spray will quickly get to the guts of any land based machine. You could get by with a plastic baggie over the housing but condensation will build up in the bag and cause it to go screwy. Totally water proof detectors are hard wired so you can't change coils and VDI screens are not to reliable for ID. AT PRO seems to fit, but it being a single frequency detector it suffers from being unstable in most saltwater sand or where a wave might wash over the coil.

Well, there is no choice for beach combing but a non vdi unit?

Minelab Sovereign GT

The Infinium is totally waterproof and has interchangeable coils. That is my beach machine and I am fine with no VDI screen as its sound
discrimination is not perfect, but does help. As for the price I bought a used one for $800. Doesn't fit all your needs, but I have 5 other
machines.

Sov. GT. Great machine but a very limited time to still own a new one.

However, Sandman is also correct, even the humidity here along the coast carries the salt effects and it will eventually invade open air machines that are routinely exposed to the environment. Also, it only takes one unexpected splash to drown an open air machine. I think you can still get rain covers for the Sov.?
