That is what it looks like, but I think most are made of wood. This object ways about 4 and 5/8 ounces.

It looks like a giant rivet. If it is, no idea what it might have held together. Man, that thing is huge!

Some kind of belt, rope or string guide used on a machine ?

It looks like a centre roller for a boat trailer, Not saying that it is but it may have been a roller for a military use maybe if it is circa 1860s.

Looks similar to the weight used in sliding hammers or removal tools, just smaller.

Only other things that come to mind are a support or guide roller for narrow objects, like pipe, bars, or extrusions.

How bout it might have been mounted on a screwed rod to help remove stuck bullets, as you screw your rod into the bullet you pull up on this thing and the weight hitting the top of the rod helps pull the bullet out. Dunno just a guess

Being that it is relatively small, my guess is that it is the roller guide from a rollered rein guide...not the typical rein guide usually seen on a harness set up, but rather a stationary guide that was mounted to a heavy wagon or farm implement were a bit more leverage was needed.
