being it a 1838 era coin ----what you have might be a "black" masons coin from back in the old days when white and black masons did not co mingle together lodge wize -- today the masonic lodges are open to any good person of any race or creed at all so it not an issue ---- the old black masons groups had two types of lodges --- king soloman and prince hall ---
or it might be a old white lodge coin --- either way black or white lodge --- the coin / token were in effect membership tokens and thus highly prized --and were not to be let fall into the "wrong hands" for easy to understand reasons -- because a "fake" person going to another lodge and knowing "a bit" might attempt to trick his way into the lodge using the coin to gain enterance
It isn't an 1838-era coin, that was the year that this particular lodge was chartered. These are pocket pieces that were carried by members - their individual "mark" is usually engraved on it - in this case the initials A T. Identical ones are probably still being given to new members.
