Got permission to hunt 12 acres about 4 miles from the Chickamauga Battlefield and one of my best finds has me stumped??

It's 2.5" wide and 2.75" long, spade shaped with an open and closed hook on the back. My initial thought is belt buckle but I figure that some of you experts would know best.

Thanks for any help!

Thanks Mackaydon! Anyone else agree or see something different?

I was thinking along the same lines as a heel plate going by the shape. Very nice find. You are so blessed in being able to hunt an area close to Chickamauga. I am 30 miles east of Atlanta and it is getting harder to find areas to hunt around here. Best of luck to you and pound that area hard.

I am with ya right up to the hooks - never saw heel plates with hooks - aren't heel plates nailed into the shoe?

I'm guessing the back of an old padlock with what some refer to as "Mickey mouse ears".

Oops, the "ears" aren't quite like the mouse ear variety (I haven't had my coffee yet).
A smokehouse padlock? Is that correct?

Just another reason why i love this board!

Never thought about the back of a lock. After looking at some of the lock images I can see resemblance. You cant see it by pics but it has a very small hole about middle down. I figured corrosion might have caused it but not now. Seems to be more like a place for a pin??

I didn't post pics but also found 2 very old links of chain about 20' from the plate. Same look and corrosion. I'll post it later but now it really has me thinking??

Thanks again for info!

Chain pic

Couple pics of the 2 chain links I found about 20' from the plate. Corrosion looks consistent with the plate. So I'm wondering are they connected? And more importantly what were they securing?
