People have been living on the land I own now since at least 1850, probably earlier, in Chatham County, NC. Finding LOTS of old square shank nails, horseshoes, horseshoe nails, etc, but I have no idea what this tool was used for. Thanks for your help!

Yes! Thank you. After you said that, I did a search and found this image. What I found sure looks like one of the 4 "tines". The description says:

"Original Item: These are the original 1860 Pattern Prussian Horse Curry combs from the time when "Cavalry was King". Used through the second half of the 19th century, including the Franco-Prussian War, through WWI and even in use into the early years of WWII. The Curry Combs are the steel brushes issued to every Cavalryman to groom his mount-essential cavalry equipment! Distinctive Prussian style, great German 19th century quality, sold to Cavalry units all over the world."

If is indeed the same item, how the heck did it end up in NC?1-curry tool.webp

Because while they were used by the military, they were also used by the general public. During that time just about everyone had a horse, and they needed to maintain and groom it. Also while some were made in Europe, they were also made in the USA, and some were exported to the USA.

Just need to remember not to read too much into what is written on many sites out there.

It's a tool made in Europe and the USA, used by the military and the general public.

Welcome to TNet and the madness, hope you stay around and enjoy the hobby, the finds, and history.
