Found these yesterday behind an old plantation. I don't know anything about shells but the smaller brass was a paper shell so I know it's fairly old. The other is a Winchester Western 20 gauge but I've never seen one with something sticking out of the brass on the end that way. Can anyone tell me anything about either of them? Dating them would be great. It also 20180404_201458.jpg20180404_201524.jpg20180404_201629.jpg20180404_201620.jpg20180404_201559.jpg helps me with knowing where to hunt next time I'm there. Also I just find it interesting.

I remember paper shells from when I was a kid, back in the 60's and 70's

The other is a 28 gauge. I used paper shells back in the 70s/80s. Easy to reload. You still might be able to buy them. Not sure who the manufacturer.

Thanks for the quick responses. I didnt know paper shells were used that recently. I found a Peters brass from a paper shell 12 gauge one time that dated to the early 1900s. It was easier to identify though. The area where i found these could not have been hunted on for at least 40-50 years. It's just a small patch of woods right in town now. So 60s seems possible. I was hoping the one was older but I'm glad to know.

The 20 ga with the primer popping out could have been caused by a faulty reloading... I've seen that happen before with 12ga shells in an autoloader gun...
