Between the cornrows, Illinois
Detector(s) used
Bounty Hunter
Ok went out detecting the farm and dug up this piece it was about 10 inches down came out shiny but badly worn and looks as if it has been in a fire.
On the one side it says Oregeon and States Of The Union the reverse side says Indiana States Of The union. It has ridges along the edges like you would find on a quarter or dime and is the size of a quarter I am stumped here cannot find it anywhere. Any ideas???

Sorry the pic is a bit rough this was the best picture I got of it.

Sorry I can't recall all the details, but these States of the Union tokens were a series given away in gas station promotional contests back in the 1960's or thereabout, with prizes for completed sets. There may also have been some "instant winner" tokens. Different series included presidents, other famous people, landmarks, and antique autos.

I recall that Shell Oil Company (with the scallop emblem) had a Presidential series of completed set winners and some instant winners--but those sets had only one (say) President per token--not two on one-like this one.
I also recall buying small batches of additional tokes from the attendant (who wanted to earn a little 'extra' money) each time I'd fill 'er up.
BTW, today it's hard to believe that "the average price for a gallon of gas in 1960 was .31 and in 1970 it was .36."

As Don notes, there was indeed a Shell Oil "States of the Union" series. If that's what you've found, the reverse should look something like this:

Nope it does not look anything like that each side depicts a seperate state first being oregon and the second side being Indiana. Also with a magnifying glass you can make out the shape of the states. Ran across another one but it is in rougher shape than the first one. that one also depicts Oregon and indiana.

Hi, you have an aluminum game piece from the second version of Shell's States of the Union Coin Game from 1969. The first version of the game had a state on the obverse and "Shell's Coin Game" on the reverse. The second version had one state on each side. Neither Oregon nor Indiana was a prize-winning state. Some information near the bottom of the page here: Shell's Mr. President Coin Game
