I found this button a few feet from a federal calvery cuff button.I believe this is a confederate "I" Infantry cuff button.I can see a "I" on the front. Can you see the "I"? I think it might have been lightly stamped .The back has rusted out.I have read that some c.s.a. button backs were iron.thanks

I honestly do not see the "I"
You should be able to see it well on the reverse side.
It's been well bathed in fertilizer.
But, I would say It dates period.

The only thing I see that resembles the possible trace of a letter "I" (the bottom of it) is corrosion, and is well off center on the right.

This button couldn't be as old as the Civil War anyway, based on the steel/tin backing.

Confederate locals had backs like that so you can't say it isn't possible.

Yes, you would be able to see anything stamped on that button in the back side as well--and it simply ain't there. The button is a blank two-piece with an iron back.

I believe that this is more likely an overall snap.I've found some like this that have trains and other logo on them.Probably dropped at some time later on.
