Hi,
I need some help in identifying this axe. It was found on a 17th century Pequot War site. When I cleaned it the makers mark appeared. . .three identical stamps. IO or OI depending on which way you look at it. I was told the shape of the axe looks French. I can't find much on 17th century axe makers marks. Any ideas?
Thanks!

It appears to be a 17th century trade ax. This site has marks very similar; PAGE 9 BISCAYNE TRADE AXES - PART 2
The other pages of that site are helpful too... They seem to be a good authority on the subject!

Just a thought - it would best not to clean it any further, as reproductions do exist.
